Getting to know Sutton

Discover the heart of west virginia

Located in the Heart of West Virginia, historic Sutton serves as the county seat for Braxton County. Positioned approximately 3.5 miles from the geographical center of the state, Sutton offers easy accessibility from I-79, Exit 62, making it just about an hour's drive from Charleston, Beckley, and Clarksburg.

Thanks to its ideal location, Sutton has emerged as a popular destination stop, offering delightful experiences with great food, exquisite art, and a plethora of outdoor fun. Nestled amidst the beautiful surroundings is the 1440-acre Sutton Lake, boasting the Bee Run Marina where you can rent a houseboat or a jonboat. Visitors to Sutton Lake can indulge in various activities, including skiing, swimming, and boating.

Meanwhile, the Elk River, renowned for its crystal clear water and exceptional fishing, has recently been designated as the state's newest Blue Trail, known as "The Elk River Water Trail," stretching a remarkable 72 miles from Sutton Dam all the way to Charleston. For adventurous mountain bikers, the 12-mile-long Jeremiah Carpenter Mt. Bike Trail, located on the north side of Sutton Dam, presents a thrilling challenge, even for expert riders.
